Interview with photographer Anna Malgina

From where are you?

I am from Russia (born in Sochi, studied in St.Petersburg, worked in Moscow), but now I am living in Italy.

What is it that attracts you the most of what you have around you?  

Now my main attractive thing is my family. My son and my husband. Also I am inspired by new countries, new places. I really like to travel and I try to create a photo story from each trip. 

Describe some of your projects

In my professional life I am focus on researching soviet 'new wave cinema' of the 60s...probably that's why as a film historian I try to create the atmosphere of my favourite films. Once I made a project dedicated to Jean Cocteau and his first movie Le Sang d'un poète.

Do what you feel to do.

Tell us about your experience as  photographer what did it give you?

It makes me happy, that’s all.

What camera do you use?  Lense?

I use a lot of analog cameras with different lenses. Now I am discovering middle format and exploring Rolleycord. Also I use Nikon em, Kiev-8, Practika. And I like to do some experimental shot with my broken cameras (Fed-3, Zenit 122) and the old expired films. I notice that with my film camera I can do beautiful mistakes. 

Tell about exhibition if you ‘ve had any.

I had a few group exhibitions and three personal. Two in Russia, and one in Italy. 

Do you sell prints? How do you make it and where can someone buy?

Yes I do. I print my photos on Fine Art paper. If you want something to buy just contact me at animalguina@gmail.com

What was your most big success? 

A personal exhibition in Italy.

I have a lot. My recent favorites are Luigi Ghirri, Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton

What is your occupation, job, interest besides photography. describe it.

I am a film historian, I am writing a book about soviet “new wave” cinema. Besides I am a mum, a wife and a curios traveller.

Which advice would you give someone who wants to become a (professional) photographer?

For my experience of becoming a photographer was important to watch a lot of films, especially silent classics. But  I think it’s too much. Just feel what you want to shot, and do it!

Describe some of your projects
My projects are all internal dialogues with my solitude. They are reflections of everything that I construct and deconstruct in myself. Each one speaks of a phase of my life, in moments that I felt the necessity of a conclusion or liberation of what happened to me.
Your main concept
What do you want to say by your art, why?

The poetry. I think my thoughts about my personal experiences, the coexistence with my children, and to see the world always from three different angles.
Time and transformation, the invisible unknown.

Tell us about your experience as  photographer what did it give you?
I started to photograph at the age of 7, using my dolls, building stories, deconstructing impossibilities ... And photography became an extension of my reflections...

Several, digital I like Nikon. But I use analog canon, Nikon, Zenith, Yashica Mat, and others. 35mm, 60mm, 24-70mm, mostly.

Motherhood, to receive my children in my life.

- From where are you? I am german but actually I am living in Vienna/Austria since 5 years. - What is it that attracts you the most of what you have around you? (everyday-)poetry, sharing thoughts with other creative people. - Describe some of your projects For "box man" I rebuilt a box according to the manual I found in the book of the same title (by Kobo Abe). I used the box for a photo and a video project, which both reflect the principle of interleaving. - Your main concept: I use my camera as a tool to explore my subconscious mind. Introspective, capturing visual associations. Picturing/Showing/Exploring contrasts of absence and presence, of hiding and revealing. - What do you want to say by your art, why? My art is more about exploring than about communicating concrete messages. I want to create an atmosphere which provides space for own projections, to invite the viewer's mind to wander around. - Tell us about your experience as photographer what did it give you?
